A second track has now been constructed between Ormeau and Coomera. This will help support future passenger growth and more express services in the Gold Coast region.

Main elements of the works

The main elements of the works between Ormeau and Coomera included:

  • Constructing a second rail line approximately 400m past Ormeau station to Coomera station
  • Constructing new bridges over waterways at Hotham Creek (Pimpama) and an adjacent waterway
  • Providing signals and overhead power on single masts outside of the new track

Background

In November 2003, the Queensland Government announced funding to upgrade rail infrastructure between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The Brisbane – Gold Coast region is one of the fastest growing population corridors in Australia. Peak hour services from the Gold Coast have already reached capacity and passenger demand continues to increase with population growth. An efficient rail service is essential to cater for this future growth.

The Gold Coast track upgrades include constructing a third track between Salisbury to Kuraby stations and duplicating the existing single track between Ormeau and Coomera stations and Helensvale to Robina.
